Treasured household items from times gone by.
Where taking tea was more than a just a drink but an occasion to be enjoyed as well as a time to reflect and be consoled. The teapot belongs to my Great Grandmother Hannah Bertha Clark, who was born in 1877 in Dunedin, Hannah grew up in notorious Walker Street near the waterfront in Dunedin. Life was hard and her father died when she was 9 years old leaving behind 4 children. Her mother Kjaersti Sigursdatter from Norway married Hans Hansen a year later. Little is known about Hannah`s life until 1896 and The Pomahaka Mystery in Otago, a sensational story throughout New Zealand. It involved the disappearance of Mary o`Shea who was found in a sack on the river. Her husband Carl Matson was later charged with her murder. His house keeper at this time was Hannah Bertha Clark who, as a young 18 year old woman, was unwittingly caught up in a series of events leading to this tragedy. In the short period of time between her disappearance and the arrests Hannah conceived my Great Aunt Hannah Christina and three years later she married my Great Grandfather Albert in January 1900. What began as a blog to celebrate my Dad’s 83rd birthday in 2009 has quickly grown to become something more than just a research project. The stories and connections are told through various media including ceramic lights, drawings, jewellery and sculptures. Hannah`s teapot is the latest piece in this collection.
