Keith McFadgen
Married to Heather McDonald 11 August 1924- 2 August 2006 Keith was born in Riverton in 1924, the youngest of 8 children. His father died when he was five months old. When he was 15 he came to Timaru to visit his sister, and spent the time at Mick Bailey’s, his brother in law, motor garage, and stayed on working for him. When Mick joined the army, Keith ran the garage until he was 18, when he also joined the army. He served first in Addington and then in Trentham, working in the Mechanics Workshops. As he was too young he had to get his mother’s permission to be able to go overseas. She would not give it as she had two other sons overseas injured in the war. When he was old enough the war was nearly over. After three and a half years he was discharged from the army in 1946. |
He then worked for a company that either repaired or dismantled USA jeeps that had been used in the Pacific Islands for either for sale or to scrap. After that was finished he worked as a mechanic in a Bus Garage in Petone, which serviced buses for the whole Wellington area. They serviced hundreds of buses. In 1955 he bought a garage and service station business in Pleasant Point.
In 1956 he met Heather and they were married in 1958. Later he bought a Hire Business in Timaru, which kept him busy for 20 years until he retired at age 65. This then gave him time to start up his hobby which gave him so much pleasure in his retirement, purchasing some military vehicles, joining the clubs and meeting up with so many interesting people. This fitted in well with his other hobby which he had had for the last 50 years, his love of guns, especially the antique ones.Keith lived a full and interesting life. Most people remember him for the retelling of his experiences of life, plus the many jokes and stories he recalled and told. |
