Elisabet Maria Enoksdatter
4 March 1835 -11 November 1900 Baptism 26 April 1835 Born Elisabet was born in Steigen, Engeløya in Nordland and Christened at the Steigen Church . Parents Marith Arentsdatter and Enok Blix Johansen 1806-1838 (unmarried) Grandparents Johan Christopher Olsen & Maren Svendsdatter Blix Family tree has been found back to 1575 Children Albert Marelius Andreassend bn 17 June 1870 (father Andreas Danielsen) Edvin Berg bn 10 Dec 1876 (father Mand Baard Olsen) Time line Born 4 march 1835 Brunes farm Steigen, (located south west on Engeløya Island 1865 Living in Helle Farm Buksnes Albert born 17 June 1871 1875 Living in Ramsvig Farm Buksnes Edvin born 10 Dec 1876 Died 26 11 November 1900 Svarholt Buried Taen cemetery Svarholt Little of her life is known but she can be traced through two census reports and what appears to be her Cemetery register. She appears to have lived all of her life around the area of Leknes and Stamsund which is 200 miles inside the Arctic circle. A beautiful yet harsh environment, famed for the the Legendary Northern Lights as well as the midnight sun. At the age of 35 Elizabeth had a son Albert Marelius Andreassen (bn 1870) with Andreas Dannielsen. Unmarried Mothers was socially unacceptable but was not uncommon. It carried a social stigma which would be noted in church Birth records `ugift`illegitimate for their children. 1865 Elisabeth is living on a farm called Helle in Buksnes, Nordland her occupation is listed as Tjenestepike (housemaid, servant) 1875 Elisabeth is living on a farm called Ramsvig in Buksnes, Nordland. Her occupation is Kokkepige (unmarried female cook) As the custom of surnames changed from Patronymics, about1870 onwards, laws were introduced so a fathers surname also became the childrens surname. Although the custom continued well into the 20th Century. This might explain Enoksdatter evolving to the more modern Enoksen. Elisabeth residence at the time of death was Svarholt, Stamsund, which is also Andreas and his wife`s Ingeborg residence. She remained unmarried throughout her life, the record also lists her status as ugift. (single not married) She is buried in the Cemetery Taen and died at the age of 65, 10 months after the marriage of Albert Marelius and Hannah Bertha in New Zealand. |

"I have found your great grandmother and great grandfather in a book called " Famiies and farms in Steigen". They are only mentioned as: Enok Johansen, Marit Arentsdtr(Arentsdatter): Elisabet M. 4.3.1835. " This means that your great grandmother was born March 4, 1835, at a place called Brunes on Engeløy. There is no other mention of any other relatives of these two in the vicinity, but I have to try to read from the church archives that you sent, because the names of the godparents are very difficult to read. Their names are in the far right-hand column of the church register. Maybe some of their relatives were godparents. Elisabeth M. was baptized on April 26, 1835. "
" I have now tried to decipher the names of the godparents, and it was not easy. This is what I have found: Dorthea Danielsdatter, Mjelle, Gudmumd Aron Olsen and Anne Larsdatter, Brunes, Freddys?? David Arntsen, Stegen, Isak Pedersen, Mjelle, Mari Larsen??, Stegen?? Looking more closely at your great grandmother's name, I think her name is Eisabeth Martha, but then I am not too sure. I have checked the above godparents' names and places of residence, but there was nothing to give any inclination as to any family of your great grandmother's. I was especially interested in Freddys? David Arntsen, but nothing came up. " Thanks to Greta Sollie & Steigen Historical Society |
